Adjusted score: The adjusted gross score for one 18-hole round after handicap hole-score rules are applied.

Course Rating: A strokes-based rating for a scratch golfer from a specific set of tees.

Slope Rating: A whole-number rating that adjusts for how a tee set affects golfers who are not scratch golfers. The standard benchmark is 113.

Score Differential: A value calculated from one adjusted score, Course Rating, and Slope Rating. Lower differentials tend to produce a lower Handicap Index.

Handicap Index: A portable measure of demonstrated scoring ability used to calculate a course-specific handicap. [2]

Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC): An official daily adjustment that can affect a posted score. This estimate uses a PCC of zero.

Mistake: Entering a raw score instead of an adjusted score.
Fix: Check Adjusted score and then recalculate. Use the adjusted gross score from your handicap record after any applicable hole-score adjustments.

Mistake: Using ratings from a different set of tees.
Fix: Check Adjusted score and then recalculate. Copy the Course Rating and Slope Rating printed for the exact tees played in that round.

Mistake: Putting the Course Rating in the Slope Rating field.
Fix: Check Adjusted score and then recalculate. Course Rating usually has a decimal, such as 71.2. Slope Rating is a whole number from 55 through 155.

Mistake: Including a 9-hole round.
Fix: Check Adjusted score and then recalculate. Enter only eligible 18-hole records. A current 9-hole score is not handled by simply doubling it. [1]

Mistake: Treating the estimated Handicap Index as the strokes received at every course.
Fix: Check Adjusted score and then recalculate. Use a Course Handicap or Playing Handicap calculation for the specific tees and competition format.

• This is an unofficial estimate. Only an authorized handicap provider can issue or update an official Handicap Index.
• Enter only eligible 18-hole score records. This calculator does not calculate from 9-hole rounds because current USGA treatment uses an expected Score Differential rather than simple doubling. [1]
• The estimate assumes a Playing Conditions Calculation of 0. An official score record may include a PCC adjustment.
• Official processing can apply exceptional-score reductions, caps, score-posting rules, and other safeguards that are not included here.
• Each Course Rating and Slope Rating must match the course and exact tees played for that round.
• Only 3 through 20 rounds are accepted. With fewer rounds, the published adjustment can make the estimate change more after a new round is added.

Round calculation

For each eligible 18-hole round, the calculator finds a Score Differential and rounds that value to one decimal place.

Score Differential = nearest 0.1 of ((113 / Slope Rating) * (Adjusted score - Course Rating))

The fixed value 113 is the standard Slope Rating benchmark. Each round stays separate because Course Rating and Slope Rating can change with the tee set played.

Which rounds count

The calculator sorts the differentials from lowest to highest only to choose the values that count. It keeps the round-by-round display in the order entered. The published table selects 1 lowest differential for 3 through 5 rounds, 2 for 6 through 8 rounds, and 8 for 20 rounds.

Average selected differentials = sum of selected differentials / number selected

Estimated Handicap Index = nearest 0.1 of (average selected differentials + table adjustment)

For 3 rounds, the table adjustment is -2.0. It is -1.0 for 4 rounds and 6 rounds, and 0.0 for the other supported round counts.

Worked example

Suppose three rounds have adjusted scores of 90, 88, and 86, each with a Course Rating of 72.0 and a Slope Rating of 113. The differentials are 18.0, 16.0, and 14.0. With three rounds, the lowest differential is 14.0. Adding the -2.0 table adjustment gives an estimated Handicap Index of 12.0.
