The $100 repair and $600 replacement values are editable examples for trying the comparison, not current market estimates. Replace them with local shop or insurer quotes.

How to use our Windshield Repair vs Replacement Out-of-Pocket Cost Calculator
- Enter the full amount in Windshield repair quote ($) and Windshield replacement quote ($), including listed tax and fees.
- Choose a Repair coverage status and Replacement coverage status based on your policy, insurer app, or claim portal.
- If repair is confirmed covered, choose the correct Repair deductible or waiver and enter the Repair deductible ($) when needed.
- If replacement is confirmed covered, enter the deductible shown for that claim in Replacement deductible ($).
- Check that both quotes include the same kinds of charges, especially calibration, mobile service, tax, and fees, then compare the lower-cost available service out-of-pocket result.

$0 repair deductible or waiver: A confirmed policy term that makes your repair claim out-of-pocket amount $0.
Confirmed covered: Coverage that your insurer, policy, or claim portal says applies to that service.
Insurer payment: The part of a confirmed covered quote left after your deductible or waiver is applied.
Out-of-pocket: The immediate amount you would personally pay for the service.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering only the glass price in Windshield replacement quote ($) while the other quote includes installation and tax.
Fix: Enter the full total due for each quote, or ask the shop what is included.
Mistake: Choosing Confirmed covered for Repair coverage status because you have auto insurance.
Fix: Confirm that this specific repair claim is covered before choosing Confirmed covered.
Mistake: Treating a $0 repair deductible or waiver as the same as no repair coverage.
Fix: Check Windshield repair quote ($) and then recalculate. Choose $0 repair deductible or waiver only after confirming coverage and the waiver with your insurer.
Mistake: Using the same number for Repair deductible ($) and Replacement deductible ($) without checking your policy.
Fix: Copy each deductible separately because glass repair and replacement can have different terms.
Mistake: Reading a $0 Repair insurer payment as a denial of coverage.
Fix: If the repair quote is no more than the deductible, the insurer payment can be $0 even with confirmed coverage.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This compares immediate quoted costs only. It does not decide whether damage can safely be repaired or whether replacement is required.
- Insurance results are estimates only when you choose Confirmed covered. Claim eligibility, exclusions, deductibles, and waivers must be confirmed with your insurer.
- Each quote is treated as a complete one-time total. Results can differ if one quote excludes calibration, mobile service, tax, moldings, clips, or other fees.
- The calculator does not estimate future premium changes, claim effects, rental costs, or warranty differences.
- A deductible greater than the quote means the insured out-of-pocket amount equals the quote and the insurer payment is $0.
Methodology
How the comparison is calculated
The calculator uses the total quotes you enter. For each service, it uses an insured amount only when its coverage status is Confirmed covered. Otherwise, it uses the cash-pay quote.
Repair cash-pay cost = Windshield repair quote ($)
Replacement cash-pay cost = Windshield replacement quote ($)
Covered repair out-of-pocket = $0 with a confirmed waiver; otherwise the smaller of the repair quote and Repair deductible ($)
Covered replacement out-of-pocket = the smaller of the replacement quote and Replacement deductible ($)
Insurer payment = quote - covered out-of-pocket
Lower-cost available service out-of-pocket = the smaller available repair or replacement amount
Mini-example
If the repair quote is $120, repair is confirmed covered, and the repair deductible is $250, the repair out-of-pocket amount is $120 and insurer payment is $0. If replacement is $900 with confirmed coverage and a $500 deductible, the replacement out-of-pocket amount is $500 and insurer payment is $400. Repair has the lower immediate cost at $120.
What the comparison does not decide
A $0 repair waiver is used only when you select it after confirmation. Unknown or not-covered services stay at their cash-pay quote. The calculation does not determine repair safety, coverage approval, or whether quote line items match, so confirm those details with the shop and insurer.
