How to use our Torr to PSI Converter

  1. Enter your value in Pressure in torr. Use absolute pressure, so 760 torr is about normal air pressure.
  2. Choose Decimal places to control how much detail you want in the displayed psi value.
  3. Click Calculate to see Pressure in psi, Percent of standard atmosphere, the plain-language Comparison to 1 atm, and the Conversion factor used.
  4. Sanity-check the result: if you entered 760 torr, the calculator should show about 14.6959 psi and 100% of standard atmosphere.

Definitions

Torr: A pressure unit. In this calculator, it is the starting unit you enter.

PSI: Pounds per square inch, a pressure unit commonly used in the US.

Absolute pressure: Pressure measured from a perfect vacuum. In this tool, Pressure in torr and Pressure in psi are absolute pressure values.

Standard atmosphere: A common reference pressure equal to 760 torr, used here to show context for your entry [1].

Percent of standard atmosphere: How your entered torr value compares with 760 torr. A value of 100% means about 1 atm.

Conversion factor used: The constant multiplier that changes torr into psi.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Leaving Pressure in torr blank.
Fix: Enter a number in Pressure in torr before you click Calculate.

Mistake: Typing a negative value in Pressure in torr .
Fix: Use 0 or a positive number because this calculator treats torr as absolute pressure.

Mistake: Treating Pressure in psi as gauge pressure from a tire or pump gauge.
Fix: Read Pressure in psi as absolute pressure unless you separately convert a relative pressure value.

Mistake: Thinking a tiny result means the calculator failed because Pressure in psi rounds to 0.
Fix: Change Decimal places to 6 or 8 to show more detail for very small pressures.

Mistake: Reading Percent of standard atmosphere as a unit conversion to psi.
Fix: Use Pressure in psi for the converted unit and use Percent of standard atmosphere only as context compared with 760 torr.

Mistake: Ignoring the Comparison to 1 atm note when checking whether a value is low or high.
Fix: Use Comparison to 1 atm to quickly tell whether your entered pressure is below, near, or above normal atmospheric pressure.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator converts absolute pressure only. If your starting number is a gauge reading, you must account for atmospheric pressure separately.
  • Negative torr values are not allowed because absolute pressure cannot be below zero.
  • The 1 atm comparison uses 760 torr as the reference point, so it is a context aid, not a separate pressure unit.
  • Displayed values depend on the selected Decimal places, so very small positive pressures can appear as 0 when rounded too aggressively.
  • Results are mathematical conversions. Real instruments can differ because of calibration, temperature effects, or whether a device reports gauge pressure instead of absolute pressure.

Methodology

Conversion method

The calculator converts torr to psi through standard atmosphere and pascal relationships. It uses 760 torr = 1 atm and 1 atm = 101325 Pa, then converts pascals to psi with 1 psi = 6894.757293168 Pa [1].

psi = torr * 101325 / (760 * 6894.757293168)

atm_percent = (torr / 760) * 100

What the outputs mean

Pressure in psi is the main converted value. Percent of standard atmosphere shows how close the input is to 760 torr. Comparison to 1 atm turns that percent into a short note such as below, near, or above standard atmospheric pressure.

Mini example

If you enter 760 torr, the psi calculation is 760 * 101325 / (760 * 6894.757293168) = 14.6959 psi after rounding to 4 decimal places. The atmosphere comparison is (760 / 760) * 100 = 100%, so the note should say it is about standard atmospheric pressure.

Calculation choices

The converter accepts 0 torr and returns 0 psi. It rejects blank, non-numeric, and negative Pressure in torr entries. Commas and spaces are removed before parsing so values like 2,000 still calculate correctly.

Assumptions used

This page assumes the entered torr value is absolute pressure, not gauge pressure. The plain-language atmosphere note is only a guide for interpretation, and rounded display values may hide very small positive results unless you increase Decimal places.
