Use this Sales Tax Calculator to add sales tax to a before-tax price or to back out the before-tax price from a tax-included total using your sales tax rate.
Advanced options
How to use our Sales Tax Calculator
- Pick what you want to calculate: Add tax (you know the before-tax price) or Remove tax (you know the tax-included total).
- Enter the Amount (USD). In Add tax mode, enter the before-tax price. In Remove tax mode, enter the total price with tax included.
- Choose your Tax rate input method: Combined rate (one percent) or Rate breakdown (state, county, city, district).
- If you chose Combined rate, enter the Combined sales tax rate (percent) exactly as a percent (example: 8.875).
- If you chose Rate breakdown, enter any of the component rates you know (leave unknown parts blank). Make sure no component is negative.
- Choose a Rounding option (most receipts round money to the nearest cent).
- Open Advanced options to change Display decimals (money) and Rate math precision if you need more control over cents-level differences.
- Click Calculate to see the sales tax amount, before-tax price, total price, and the sales tax rate used.
- If you used a breakdown, read the Rate breakdown check message and fix any mismatch or invalid entries.
Definitions
Sales tax rate (percent): The tax percentage you apply to the before-tax price (for example, 8.875 means 8.875%). [2]
Rate (decimal): The percent written as a decimal for math (percent divided by 100).
Before-tax price: The starting price before sales tax is added (also called the taxable base). [2]
Sales tax amount: The dollar amount of tax added to the before-tax price. [1]
Total price (tax included): Before-tax price plus sales tax (what you pay at checkout for a fully taxable item). [1]
Rate breakdown: Entering separate tax parts (state, county, city, district) that add up to one combined rate.
Rounding to cents: Showing money to 2 decimals (nearest cent) so results match typical receipts.
Methodology
Overview
This calculator supports two directions: (1) Add tax to a before-tax price, and (2) Remove tax from a tax-included total to find the before-tax price. The math uses the standard percent-of-a-number idea.
1) Build the rate to use
If you select Combined rate, the entered combined rate (percent) is used.
If you select Rate breakdown, the combined rate (percent) is the sum of the parts. Any blank part is treated as 0, but negative parts are not allowed.
combined_rate_percent = state_rate_percent + county_rate_percent + city_rate_percent + district_rate_percent
rate_decimal = rate_percent / 100
2) Add tax mode (before-tax to total)
Use this when the Amount (USD) you entered is the before-tax price.
sales_tax = before_tax_price * rate_decimal
total_price = before_tax_price + sales_tax
3) Remove tax mode (tax-included to before-tax)
Use this when the Amount (USD) you entered already includes tax. This backs out the before-tax price by dividing by (1 + rate_decimal). This is a standard way to reverse a percent increase.
before_tax_price = total_price / (1 + rate_decimal)
sales_tax = total_price - before_tax_price
Rounding and display
Internal math uses full precision, then dollar outputs are rounded for display based on your Display decimals (money) setting (typically 2 decimals for cents). If you change rounding settings and recalculate, results are recomputed from the original inputs so rounding is not applied twice.
Validation and edge cases
Amounts must be 0 or higher. Sales tax rates must be 0 or higher. In Combined rate mode, a blank combined rate is an error (it is not treated as 0). In Remove tax mode, rates that make (1 + rate_decimal) equal to 0 or less are blocked to avoid invalid division. If the effective rate is very large (for example, above 20%), the calculator shows a non-blocking warning to help catch common entry mistakes.
Interpretation notes
Results assume the item is fully taxable at the rate you entered. Some items can be exempt or taxed differently depending on local rules, so the correct rate and taxability still matter even when the math is correct. [2]
