How to use our Mbps to MBps Converter
- Pick a direction under Convert: either Mbps to MB/s or MB/s to Mbps.
- Enter your number in Speed. Use the speed only, because the chosen direction already sets the unit.
- If you want a time estimate, switch Also estimate download time to Yes, then enter File size, choose a File size unit, and set Real-world speed (%).

- Sanity-check the result: if you converted from Mbps to MB/s, the Converted speed should be about one-eighth of the Mbps value, and download time should get longer if you lower Real-world speed (%).
Definitions
Mbps: Megabits per second. Internet plans usually advertise speed in this unit [2].
MB/s: Megabytes per second. Download apps often show file transfer speed in this unit [2].
Bit and byte: A byte is 8 bits, so MB/s is 8 times larger than Mbps for the same transfer rate [2].
File size unit: The storage unit used for File size. MB and GB are decimal units, while MiB and GiB are binary units.
Real-world speed (%): The share of the ideal transfer speed you actually get after overhead, Wi-Fi slowdown, or server limits.
Estimated real-world speed: The adjusted MB/s used for the time estimate after applying Real-world speed (%).
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering 100 in Speed and reading it as 100 MB/s when Convert is set to Mbps to MB/s .
Fix: Check the direction first. With Mbps to MB/s , a Speed of 100 converts to 12.5 in Converted speed .
Mistake: Turning on Also estimate download time but leaving File size at 0 or blank.
Fix: Enter a positive number in File size and choose the matching File size unit before you calculate.
Mistake: Picking GB in File size unit when the file is listed in GiB , or mixing up MB and MiB .
Fix: Match the unit shown by the app or website exactly. This changes both Estimated download time and the Notes you should use to interpret it.
Mistake: Using 100 in Real-world speed (%) and expecting your actual download app to always match it.
Fix: Treat 100% as the ideal case. Lower Real-world speed (%) if Wi-Fi, server limits, or protocol overhead make your Estimated real-world speed slower.
Mistake: Entering a negative number in Speed or a value above 100 in Real-world speed (%) .
Fix: Use a non-negative Speed , and keep Real-world speed (%) greater than 0 and at most 100 for a valid time estimate.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The main conversion assumes exactly 8 bits in 1 byte and does not model network protocol details.
- Estimated download time is only an estimate. Actual time can change with Wi-Fi quality, server speed, device limits, and network congestion.
- When time is enabled, the estimate uses Estimated real-world speed in MB/s, even if you started with MB/s to Mbps. That is because file time is calculated from megabytes per second.
- MB and GB are treated as decimal units, while MiB and GiB are treated as binary units. Picking the wrong File size unit can noticeably change the time result.
- A Speed of 0 is allowed for pure conversion, but time cannot be estimated at zero effective transfer speed.
- Real-world speed (%) must be greater than 0 and at most 100 for the time estimate. Values outside that range are blocked as input errors.
Methodology
How the converter works
The calculator changes bits to bytes using the standard 8-to-1 relationship. That is why internet speed in Mbps looks 8 times bigger than file transfer speed in MB/s for the same connection [2].
MBps = Mbps / 8
Mbps = MBps * 8
File size conversion for time estimates
To estimate download time, the file size is first converted to decimal megabytes so it can be divided by MB/s.
size_MB = value
size_MB = value * 1000 for GB
size_MB = value * 1.048576 for MiB
size_MB = value * 1073.741824 for GiB
Real-world speed adjustment
If you turn on the time estimate, the calculator applies Real-world speed (%) to the ideal MB/s rate.
effective_MBps = ideal_MBps * efficiency_pct / 100
time_seconds = size_MB / effective_MBps
Mini example
If Convert is set to Mbps to MB/s and Speed is 200, the ideal transfer rate is 25 MB/s.
25 = 200 / 8
If File size is 2 and File size unit is GB, the file is 2,000 MB. At 25 MB/s, the estimated time is 80 seconds.
2000 = 2 * 1000
80 = 2000 / 25
If Real-world speed (%) is 80, the effective speed becomes 20 MB/s and the same file would take 100 seconds.
20 = 25 * 80 / 100
100 = 2000 / 20
Assumptions used
The conversion is ideal and unit-based. It does not include packet overhead, retransmissions, pauses, or changing network speed. Small differences can also appear when a source lists a file in GB but your device reports it in GiB or MiB.
