How to use our Infrared vs Traditional Sauna Lifetime Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the quoted Infrared sauna price, Infrared setup costs, Traditional sauna price, and Traditional setup costs.
  2. Enter your all-in variable Electricity rate from a recent bill, then choose Sessions per week and Years owned.
  3. Open Advanced options and replace the example power, warm-up, session, cycling, and Weeks used per year values with product specifications and your planned use.
  4. Select Calculate and compare the signed Estimated lifetime cost difference with both all-in lifetime totals.
  5. Sanity-check the Infrared electricity per session and Traditional electricity per session; unusually high values often mean watts, kilowatts, or minutes were entered incorrectly.

Definitions

All-in lifetime cost: Upfront project cost plus estimated electricity cost over the entered Years owned.

Upfront project cost: Sauna price plus setup costs, such as delivery, assembly, wiring, panel work, or site preparation.

kWh (kilowatt-hour): A unit of electrical energy. Your utility uses kWh to measure electricity billed for use.

Rated power: The listed maximum electrical draw of the infrared sauna, entered in watts (W).

Heater size: The listed power of the traditional electric heater, entered in kilowatts (kW). One kW equals 1,000 W.

Full-power time during session: The estimated percent of seated session time when a sauna draws its rated power. It describes cycling or reduced draw, not efficiency.

Electricity rate: The variable price paid per kWh. The editable default is a 2026 U.S. residential planning estimate through May. [1]

Longer warm-up time and higher heater power can make traditional sauna electricity use higher per session.Electricity use per sauna sessionWorked example: 10-minute infrared warm-up and 45-minute traditional warm-up, plus 30-minute sessionsInfrared1.2 kWhTraditional6 kWhSauna type

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering only the electricity supply charge in Electricity rate.
Fix: Use the all-in usage rate, including usage-based supply and delivery charges. Leave out fixed monthly customer charges unless the sauna changes your service.

Mistake: Entering a traditional heater's watts in Traditional heater size.
Fix: This field uses kW. Enter 6 for a 6,000 W heater.

Mistake: Combining warm-up and seated time in Infrared session time or Traditional session time.
Fix: Put pre-session heating in the matching warm-up field and seated time in the matching session-time field.

Mistake: Treating Traditional full-power time during session as heater efficiency.
Fix: Enter the estimated share of seated minutes when the heater draws full rated power; use 100 if you want a full-power estimate.

Mistake: Reading a negative Estimated lifetime cost difference as an error.
Fix: A negative amount means the traditional option is estimated to cost less over the selected years.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This is an estimate based on the quotes, power ratings, timing, and use pattern you enter. Example values are not market averages.
  • Warm-up is treated as full rated power. During the seated session, power is reduced only by the entered full-power percentage.
  • The electricity rate, planned sessions, and active weeks are held constant for every year owned. Future utility-price changes are not modeled.
  • Maintenance, repairs, replacement parts, financing, permits, resale value, and home-value effects are excluded.
  • Fixed utility customer charges are excluded because they normally do not change when a sauna is added. Include a documented service or tariff change in setup costs only if it is a one-time project cost.
  • Actual use can differ with outdoor temperature, insulation, sauna size, thermostat behavior, starting temperature, and household habits.

Methodology

Cost calculation

The calculator keeps one-time project costs separate from recurring electricity costs. It first finds annual sessions from your planned weekly use and active weeks.

Sessions per year = Sessions per week × Weeks used per year

For each sauna, warm-up is counted at rated power. Seated-session energy is adjusted by the entered full-power percentage.

Infrared kWh per session = (Infrared rated power in W / 1000) × ((Infrared warm-up time / 60) + (Infrared session time / 60) × (Infrared full-power time during session / 100))

Traditional kWh per session = Traditional heater size in kW × ((Traditional warm-up time / 60) + (Traditional session time / 60) × (Traditional full-power time during session / 100))

Per-session energy is multiplied by annual sessions and the Electricity rate to estimate yearly electricity cost.

Annual electricity cost = kWh per session × Sessions per year × Electricity rate

Purchase and setup costs are added once. Annual electricity cost is multiplied by Years owned, then added to the upfront project cost.

All-in lifetime cost = (Sauna price + Setup costs) + (Annual electricity cost × Years owned)

Estimated lifetime cost difference = Traditional all-in lifetime cost - Infrared all-in lifetime cost

Worked example

With 3 sessions per week for 52 weeks, the yearly count is 156 sessions. An infrared sauna rated at 1,800 W with 10 warm-up minutes and a 30-minute full-power session uses 1.2 kWh per session. At $0.1811 per kWh, that is $33.90 per year before rounding. With a $4,000 price, $1,000 setup cost, and 10 years owned, its estimated all-in lifetime cost is $5,339.02.

Rate default

The editable Electricity rate default is $0.1811 per kWh, based on the EIA U.S. residential average for 2026 year-to-date through May. Replace it with the variable rate from your own bill for a local estimate. [1]
