How to use our Headlight Restoration vs Replacement Lifetime Cost Calculator

  1. Choose the visible headlight conditions, including whether there is outside haze, a crack or chip, moisture inside, or housing damage.
  2. Enter the restoration quote and choose whether that price covers both headlights or is a per-headlight price.
  3. Enter your ownership time, expected time between restorations, assembly price, number of assemblies, and total replacement labor.
  4. Open Advanced options only if UV coating or headlamp aiming is listed as a separate charge on your quote.
  5. Check the lifetime cost difference, service count, and break-even month. Change the restoration interval if it is only a rough estimate to see how much it changes the decision.

Definitions

Restoration service: One cleaning, sanding, polishing, and protective-coating job counted at the start of the plan and again at each planned interval.

Headlamp assembly: The complete headlight unit, including its lens and housing. It is different from a replacement bulb.

Restoration quote covers: Whether the entered restoration price is one price for both headlights or a price for each headlight.

Lifetime cost difference: One-time replacement cost minus restoration cost during your ownership plan. A positive amount means replacement costs more; a negative amount means replacement costs less.

Break-even month: The first month when planned spending on repeated restoration reaches or exceeds the one-time replacement cost. Month 0 means replacement already costs no more than the first restoration.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a price for both headlights but choosing Per headlight under Restoration quote covers.
Fix: Choose Both headlights when one Restoration quote ($) covers the pair.

Mistake: Entering a bulb price in Headlamp assembly price ($ each).
Fix: Enter the price for a complete headlamp assembly, then choose the number in Headlamp assemblies to replace.

Mistake: Treating Time between restorations (months) as a guaranteed lifespan.
Fix: Use the written warranty, provider guidance, or your best estimate, then test a shorter interval if you are unsure.

Mistake: Adding UV coating twice by including it in Restoration quote ($) and in Separate UV coating add-on ($ per restoration).
Fix: Leave the separate UV coating field blank when coating is already included in the restoration quote.

Mistake: Ignoring Lens has a crack or chip, Moisture is inside the assembly, or Housing, tabs, or mounts are damaged.
Fix: Mark these conditions accurately and treat the Restoration suitability notice as a reason to get a repair inspection before choosing restoration.

Mistake: Leaving out a separately listed aiming fee.
Fix: Add it only in Headlamp aiming charge ($) when it is a separate item on the replacement estimate.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The result is a quote comparison, not a diagnosis of headlight safety, light output, or legal compliance.
  • Restoration is treated as a repeating service at the interval you enter. Weather, sun exposure, lens material, coating quality, and parking conditions can change how long it lasts.
  • Replacement is modeled as one event at the start of the comparison. It does not include possible future damage, warranty coverage, resale value, taxes, shipping, or shop fees unless they are already inside your entered prices.
  • Cracks, chips, moisture inside the assembly, and damaged housings, tabs, or mounts can make surface restoration unsuitable. The calculator keeps the cost comparison visible but cannot decide whether repair or replacement is required.
  • Optional UV coating and aiming charges count only when you enter them. Blank optional fields are treated as $0.

Methodology

Calculation rules

A restoration quote for both headlights is used once per service. A per-headlight quote is multiplied by the number of headlights covered. A separately entered UV coating charge is added to every restoration service.

restoration service cost = restoration quote x quote multiplier + UV coating add-on

The calculator counts the restoration done now, then counts additional services needed before the ownership plan ends.

restoration services counted = ceil(ownership months / time between restorations)

restoration cost during ownership = restoration services counted x restoration service cost

Replacement is treated as a one-time event. The total includes complete assemblies, total installation labor, and an optional separately entered aiming charge.

one-time replacement cost = assembly price each x assemblies to replace + replacement labor + aiming charge

lifetime cost difference = one-time replacement cost - restoration cost during ownership

A positive cost difference means restoration costs less during the planned ownership period. A negative difference means replacement costs less.

Break-even timing

The break-even month is based on the first planned restoration event whose cumulative cost reaches or exceeds the replacement total. If replacement costs no more than the first restoration, the break-even month is 0.

break-even month = 0 when replacement cost is no more than one restoration service; otherwise (ceil(replacement cost / restoration service cost) - 1) x restoration interval

Worked example

For a $120 quote covering both headlights, a 60-month ownership plan, and a 24-month restoration interval, the calculator counts 3 services. Restoration costs $360. If replacement is two $250 assemblies plus $180 labor, replacement costs $680, so replacement costs $320 more. The planned restoration spending reaches $680 at month 120, outside the 60-month plan.

What can change the estimate

The calculation assumes the entered restoration interval and quote amounts stay the same over the plan. It does not assume that an exterior haze can be fixed safely when there is a crack, internal moisture, or housing damage. Those conditions trigger a suitability notice because a surface-restoration price alone may not describe the needed repair.
