How to use our Cattle Stocking Rate, AUM and Grazing Days Calculator

  1. Choose what you want to find: cattle supported, pasture acres needed, or grazing days available.
  2. Enter forage available for this grazing period in lb DM/acre, using dry matter rather than green or as-fed forage weight.
  3. Enter Planned forage use (percent) and Animal demand per animal (AUE) from your grazing plan, then enter the pasture area, cattle count, or grazing time shown for your chosen question.
  4. Open Advanced options only if needed to subtract Land that cannot be grazed (acres) or apply Uneven grazing loss (percent) and Extra forage reserve (percent).
  5. Check that Usable dry forage after all reductions and dry forage demand match your plan; if a small change in forage or days would change the decision, use a more conservative value and monitor the pasture.

Definitions

Dry matter (DM): Forage weight after water is removed. The calculator uses lb DM/acre so forage supply and cattle demand use the same basis.

Planned forage use: The percent of produced forage included in the grazing budget. It is entered as 25 for 25%.

Animal unit equivalent (AUE): A number that scales one animal's forage demand relative to one animal unit. An AUE of 1.0 uses 26 lb DM per day in this calculator.

Animal unit month (AUM): A forage-demand unit equal here to one animal unit for 30 days, or 780 lb DM.

Uneven grazing loss: A separate reduction for forage cattle cannot use evenly on otherwise grazeable land, such as forage far from water or on difficult terrain.

Extra forage reserve: An additional percentage held back for drought or uncertainty after planned forage use and uneven grazing loss.

Dry forage per animal unitThe AUM convention used in this calculator converts daily demand into 30-day forage needs.. At 26 lb DM per day, one animal unit requires 780 lb DM for 30 days.Dry forage per animal unitThe AUM convention used in this calculator converts daily demand into 30-day forage needs.1 day26 lb DM30 days780 lb DMTime period

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering green forage or bale weight in Forage available for this grazing period (lb DM/acre).
Fix: Enter pounds of dry matter per acre for the same grazing period, not wet or as-fed weight.

Mistake: Treating all mapped land as usable in Pasture area before optional exclusions (acres).
Fix: Put woods, ponds, roads, buildings, crop ground, and fenced-out land in Land that cannot be grazed (acres).

Mistake: Entering 0.25 for Planned forage use (percent) when the intended value is 25%.
Fix: Enter 25 for twenty-five percent.

Mistake: Applying Uneven grazing loss (percent) when Planned forage use (percent) already includes poor distribution.
Fix: Leave Uneven grazing loss (percent) blank unless it is a separate reduction in your plan.

Mistake: Counting a cow-calf pair as one head while using an Animal demand per animal (AUE) meant for one cow.
Fix: Use a count and Animal demand per animal (AUE) that describe the same animal or pair unit.

Mistake: Reading Whole cattle supported for the planned time as a guarantee for the entire season.
Fix: Treat it as a forage-budget estimate and update Forage available for this grazing period (lb DM/acre) as pasture conditions change.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The result is a forage-budget estimate, not a promise of pasture performance. Weather, regrowth, plant species, pasture condition, water access, and grazing behavior can change available forage.
  • Forage available for this grazing period (lb DM/acre) must describe the same period as Planned grazing time (days). Do not use an annual forage number for a short period unless it is the forage actually available to that period.
  • The calculator assumes 26 lb DM per animal unit per day and a 30-day AUM, so one AUM equals 780 lb DM. Use an AUE that fits the cattle class and whether calves are included.
  • Planned forage use, Uneven grazing loss (percent), and Extra forage reserve (percent) are sequential reductions. Do not enter the same allowance in more than one field.
  • Land that cannot be grazed (acres) is added back only when calculating total Pasture area needed with exclusions. It produces no forage in the calculation.
  • Whole cattle supported for the planned time rounds down. The unrounded capacity can still be close to the next whole animal, so use pasture monitoring before increasing stocking.

Methodology

Forage supply and demand

For cattle-supported and grazing-days questions, the calculator subtracts land that cannot be grazed from the entered pasture area. It then applies planned forage use, uneven grazing loss, and extra forage reserve one after another. Blank optional reductions are treated as 0%.

adjusted grazeable acres = pasture acres - excluded acres

usable forage = grazeable acres x lb DM/acre x planned use x (1 - uneven loss) x (1 - extra reserve)

Percent values in the formula are converted to decimals. For example, 25% is 0.25.

daily demand per animal = AUE x 26 lb DM

whole cattle supported = FLOOR(usable forage / (daily demand per animal x grazing days))

Reverse calculations

For pasture acres needed, the calculator finds total herd forage demand, divides it by usable forage per grazeable acre, then adds any excluded acres. For grazing days available, it divides usable forage by the whole herd's daily demand.

total herd daily demand = cattle count x daily demand per animal

grazing days available = usable forage / total herd daily demand

pasture acres needed = (total herd forage needed / usable forage per grazeable acre) + excluded acres

AUM calculation and example

The pasture AUM value divides usable forage by 780 lb DM. This calculator uses 26 lb DM per animal unit per day and 30 days per AUM.

pasture AUM = usable forage / 780 lb DM

Example:

100 acres with 2,000 lb DM/acre and 25% planned forage use has 50,000 lb DM of usable forage when the optional reductions are blank. At AUE 1.0, each animal needs 26 lb DM per day. For 100 days, capacity is 50,000 / (26 x 100) = 19.23 cattle, so the whole-cattle planning result is 19.

Calculation choices

The calculator rounds only Whole cattle supported for the planned time down to a whole head. Other capacity, acreage, days, forage, and AUM values remain unrounded internally and are displayed as estimates. It does not estimate forage growth, supplemental feed, animal weight changes, or pasture recovery during the entered grazing period.
