Bulk Chemical Tank Reorder Point Calculator

Enter usable tank inventory, daily usage, lead time, and a safety buffer to see days remaining and when to reorder.

How to use our Bulk Chemical Tank Reorder Point Calculator

  1. Enter Current usable inventory in gallons after subtracting any liquid your process cannot use.
  2. Enter Average daily usage from recent meter, process, or inventory records.
  3. Enter Supplier lead time and Extra safety buffer using the same day basis as daily usage.
  4. Select Calculate, then use Current reorder status to decide whether an order is due now.
  5. Sanity-check Estimated inventory when delivery arrives: a negative number means the current supply may run out before delivery.

Definitions

Current usable inventory: Liquid in the tank that the process can actually withdraw, measured in gallons.

Average daily usage: The planned average amount consumed each day, measured in gallons per day.

Supplier lead time: Days from placing an order until the chemical is available for use.

Extra safety buffer: Extra days of average usage held beyond expected lead-time use.

Safety-stock volume: The safety buffer converted to gallons. Safety stock is inventory held to reduce the chance of running short during replenishment uncertainty. [1]

Reorder point: The usable-inventory level at which an order is due. It covers expected use during lead time plus safety-stock volume.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering gross tank capacity or a percent level as Current usable inventory.
Fix: Convert the level to usable gallons and subtract any unusable heel or required reserve before entry.

Mistake: Using Average daily usage from operating days while Supplier lead time includes calendar days.
Fix: Use the same day basis for both values, or recalculate Average daily usage for calendar days.

Mistake: Treating the Reorder point for this tank as the delivery amount.
Fix: Use it as the inventory threshold for ordering; this calculator does not calculate order quantity.

Mistake: Ignoring a negative Estimated inventory when delivery arrives.
Fix: A negative value means an estimated shortage before delivery. Order sooner, shorten lead time, reduce use, or revise the plan.

Mistake: Typing 1,01 for Current usable inventory.
Fix: Use commas only for thousands, such as 1,000, and use a decimal point for decimals.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The result assumes Average daily usage stays constant until delivery. Usage spikes, shutdowns, or batch changes can make actual depletion differ.
  • Current usable inventory must already account for tank geometry, gauge error, unusable heel, required reserve, and any liquid that cannot be withdrawn.
  • Supplier lead time should include ordering, processing, transit, receiving, and any time before the chemical is ready for use.
  • The Extra safety buffer is a user-selected planning reserve. This calculator does not estimate a service level or demand and lead-time variability.
  • The calculator does not calculate tank capacity, delivery quantity, minimum order quantity, price, fees, or process-safety requirements.
  • A negative Estimated inventory when delivery arrives is a planning estimate of shortage, not a guarantee of the exact shortage amount or timing.

Methodology

Calculation method

The calculator uses current usable gallons and one average daily usage rate. It calculates the safety-stock volume first, then adds expected lead-time use to find the reorder point.

days_remaining = current_inventory_gal / average_daily_usage_gal

safety_stock_gal = average_daily_usage_gal * safety_days

reorder_point_gal = average_daily_usage_gal * lead_time_days + safety_stock_gal

inventory_at_delivery_gal = current_inventory_gal - average_daily_usage_gal * lead_time_days

reorder_gap_gal = current_inventory_gal - reorder_point_gal

days_until_reorder = reorder_gap_gal / average_daily_usage_gal

Status rule

If the reorder gap is zero or negative, the status is Order now. If it is positive, the status is Monitor and reports the estimated days until the reorder point. Signed values stay visible: a negative delivery inventory indicates an estimated shortage, while a negative time until reorder indicates the threshold has already been crossed.

Worked example

With 5,000 gallons usable inventory, 200 gallons per day usage, 10 days lead time, and a 3-day buffer, safety stock is 600 gallons. The reorder point is 2,600 gallons, days remaining is 25, and estimated inventory at delivery is 3,000 gallons. The tank is 2,400 gallons above its reorder point, so ordering is estimated to be due in 12 days.
