How to use our Alloy Wheel Repair vs Replacement Cost Calculator
- Choose How are your main quotes priced? to match both quotes: per wheel or one whole-job total.
- Enter the number in Wheels to compare (wheels), choose What is damaged?, and copy each base quote exactly.
- Open Advanced options only for charges missing from the main quotes, such as tire service, shipping, tax, or shop fees.
- Click Calculate and compare All-in repair cost with All-in replacement cost. Check that no included service was entered a second time.
- If What is damaged? is a bend, crack, or suspected air leak, use the totals for budgeting only and get a professional inspection before choosing repair.
Definitions
All-in repair cost: The repair quote for the entered wheels plus repair-side extras that were not included.
All-in replacement cost: The replacement wheel quote plus missing tire service and one-time replacement charges.
All-in cost difference: Replacement all-in cost minus repair all-in cost. A positive amount means replacement costs more; a negative amount means repair costs more.
Per wheel: A price for each affected wheel. The calculator multiplies this price by Wheels to compare (wheels).
Whole job total: One price covering all compared wheels. The calculator does not multiply this main quote again.
One-time charge: A charge for the full replacement job, such as shipping, tax, or a shop fee, added once rather than for every wheel.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a four-wheel package price while How are your main quotes priced? is set to Per wheel.
Fix: Choose Whole job total, or divide only if the quote truly gives an equal per-wheel price.
Mistake: Using the total number of wheels on the vehicle instead of the damaged ones in Wheels to compare (wheels).
Fix: Enter only the one to four wheels covered by both quotes.
Mistake: Adding mounting or balancing twice in Repair extras not included ($ per wheel).
Fix: Add an extra only if the repair quote does not already include it.
Mistake: Treating a wheel-listing price as the complete replacement cost.
Fix: Add missing mount, balance, installation, shipping, tax, or fees in Replacement tire service not included ($ per wheel) or Replacement shipping, tax, or shop fees not included ($ once).
Mistake: Picking repair solely because the All-in cost difference favors it for a crack or bend.
Fix: Follow the Wheel safety note and have possible structural damage inspected before making a cost-only choice.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This is quote arithmetic, not a repairability or safety assessment. A bend, crack, or suspected air leak needs professional inspection before a cost-only decision.
- It compares up to four affected wheels and assumes the entered repair and replacement quotes cover the same wheels and work scope.
- Blank optional charges count as $0. Add tire work, refinishing, balancing, shipping, tax, fees, or other items only when they are not already included in a main quote.
- It does not compare wheel quality, warranty, availability, finish matching, vehicle downtime, resale value, or the condition of a used or reconditioned replacement wheel.
- A whole-job quote is treated as already covering the entered wheels; only per-wheel extras are multiplied by the wheel count.
Methodology
Calculation method
The calculator first turns each main quote into a whole-job amount. With Per wheel selected, it multiplies each main quote by Wheels to compare (wheels). With Whole job total selected, it uses each main quote once.
repair base total = repair quote x wheels to compare, or repair quote for a whole-job total
replacement base total = replacement wheel quote x wheels to compare, or replacement wheel quote for a whole-job total
Repair-side extras are per wheel. Replacement tire service is also per wheel, while shipping, tax, and shop fees are added once.
all-in repair cost = repair base total + (repair extras per wheel x wheels to compare)
all-in replacement cost = replacement base total + (replacement tire service per wheel x wheels to compare) + replacement job charges
all-in cost difference = all-in replacement cost - all-in repair cost
Worked example
For two wheels, a $125 repair quote plus $25 in repair extras per wheel gives $300. A $300 replacement quote plus $40 in tire service per wheel and $30 in one-time charges gives $710. The cost difference is $410, so replacement costs $410 more in that example.
Decision handling
Blank optional charges are calculated as $0. Nonblank quote amounts must be valid nonnegative dollar amounts. For cosmetic damage, the lower-cost quote summary identifies the cheaper entered option. For a bent wheel, crack, or suspected air leak, the calculator shows both totals but does not present a repair recommendation because the wheel needs inspection.
