Use this Protein Calculator by Ounces to estimate daily protein as ounces of protein nutrient, see a grams reference, split the target across meals, and translate the target into ounces of a food from its nutrition label.
Advanced options
How to use the Protein Calculator by Ounces
- Enter your body weight in pounds or kilograms.
- Choose your age group, sex, and protein goal.
- Leave Ounces of protein selected for an ounces-first answer.
- Optional: open Advanced options to change the default three-meal split or enter both values from a food label to estimate ounces of that specific food.
- Click Calculate. Read the ounce result first and use the gram line as a label-checking reference.
Important: 2 ounces of protein nutrient is not the same thing as 2 ounces of chicken, meat, fish, beans, or protein powder. Foods contain water, fat, carbohydrate, and other material in addition to protein.
Worked example: 160-pound older adult
For a 160 lb woman age 71+ using the general-health setting, this calculator estimates about 2.05 ounces of protein per day. That is the same protein amount as about 58 grams per day. Split evenly across three meals, it is about 0.68 ounces of protein per meal, or roughly 19 grams per meal.
The ounce result is obtained only after calculating the guidance in grams and then applying the exact avoirdupois mass conversion. One ounce equals 28.349523125 grams [4].
Convert a protein target to ounces of food
Nutrition Facts information is normally listed per serving, and protein is listed in grams [5]. If a food provides 25 g of protein in a 4 oz serving, a 58 g daily target would require about 2.32 servings, or about 9.29 oz of that food, if that one food supplied the entire target.
food_ounces_per_day = (protein_target_g / protein_g_per_serving) x serving_size_oz
This is a mathematical label conversion, not a recommendation to obtain all protein from one food.
Methodology
The calculator first converts pounds to kilograms when needed. It then applies the same life-stage and goal logic used by the main Protein Calculator. For many generally healthy adults, the baseline is 0.8 g/kg/day [1]. Goal modes can use higher body-weight factors, and the calorie comparison uses the adult protein AMDR when calories are supplied [1][2].
protein_target_g_day = body_weight_kg x goal_factor_g_per_kg_day
protein_target_oz_day = protein_target_g_day / 28.349523125
protein_per_meal = protein_target / meals_per_day
The visible ounce results use two decimal places. Gram references are rounded according to the selected gram-rounding option.
Limitations and safety notes
- This is a planning estimate for generally healthy people, not medical advice or a diagnosis.
- Kidney disease, pregnancy, illness, recovery, and clinician-prescribed diets can require different targets.
- The food conversion is only as accurate as the protein and serving-size values entered from the label.
- Serving sizes describe amounts commonly consumed; they are not automatically recommended portions [5].
- Splitting protein evenly across meals is a convenience calculation, not a required meal pattern.
