How to use our Dishwasher vs Hand Washing Cost Calculator
- Enter the number of Loads washed each week, your local Electricity rate, and separate Water rate and Sewer rate. The calculator starts with EPA WaterSense 2024 U.S. residential averages.
- Enter water and electricity used for a typical dishwasher cycle, then estimate the water used for one full handwashing session.
- Open Advanced options if you want to include handwashing water-heating electricity, soap, detergent, or dishwasher purchase details.
- Select Calculate and read the signed Annual operating cost difference (dishwasher minus hand washing); a negative number means the dishwasher costs less to operate.
- Sanity-check the result by confirming that each load is a comparable amount of dishes. Use the volumetric water and sewer charges from your bill when available, and leave fixed monthly charges out because they do not change with gallons used.
Definitions
Load: One dishwasher cycle or one full handwashing session for a comparable amount of dishes.
Electricity rate: The price paid for one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity.
Water rate: The volumetric drinking-water charge per 1,000 gallons. The default is EPA WaterSense's 2024 U.S. residential average of $7.74 per 1,000 gallons.
Sewer rate: The volumetric wastewater charge per 1,000 gallons. The default is EPA WaterSense's 2024 U.S. residential average of $9.09 per 1,000 gallons.
Annual operating cost difference: Yearly dishwasher operating cost minus yearly handwashing operating cost. A negative amount means dishwasher operation costs less.
Annualized ownership cost: Dishwasher operating cost plus yearly maintenance and an even yearly share of purchase and installation costs.
Payback time: The estimated years for yearly dishwasher operating savings, after yearly maintenance, to equal the one-time purchase and installation cost.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering 16 instead of 0.16 for Electricity rate.
Fix: Enter dollars per kWh, so 16 cents per kWh is 0.16.
Mistake: Copying the total monthly water or sewer bill into a rate field.
Fix: Enter each volumetric charge per 1,000 gallons. Exclude base fees and other fixed monthly charges; enter 0 for sewer if no usage-based sewer charge applies.
Mistake: Counting a quick rinse as a full load in Loads washed each week.
Fix: Count one dishwasher cycle and one comparable full handwashing session as one load.
Mistake: Leaving Dishwasher water used based on an eco cycle while Dishwasher electricity used is from a heavy cycle.
Fix: Use water and electricity figures for the same cycle you normally run.
Mistake: Treating a blank Dishwasher purchase price as $0 when deciding whether to buy a machine.
Fix: Enter Dishwasher purchase price, Installation cost, and Expected dishwasher life to calculate ownership cost and payback.
Mistake: Reading a negative Annual operating cost difference (dishwasher minus hand washing) as an error.
Fix: A negative value means the dishwasher has lower estimated yearly operating cost.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The estimate uses 52 weeks per year and assumes the same number of comparable loads for both methods.
- It includes only volumetric water, sewer, electricity, and optional soap or detergent costs that you enter. It excludes fixed water and sewer fees because those normally do not change between washing methods, and it does not value your time.
- The sewer calculation assumes the gallons used are billed as wastewater. Some utilities use winter averages, caps, separate meters, or other billing rules, so replace the default with the applicable marginal rate or enter 0 when sewer charges do not vary with this use.
- The handwashing heating field applies only to electricity used to heat water. Leave it blank if your water heater uses gas or another fuel unless you have converted that fuel cost to an equivalent electricity cost yourself.
- Actual dishwasher water and energy use can change by cycle, soil level, load size, inlet-water temperature, drying setting, and machine condition.
- Purchase payback is shown only when entered operating savings after yearly maintenance are greater than zero. It does not account for financing, resale value, future utility-rate changes, or repairs beyond the maintenance budget.
- Annualized ownership cost spreads purchase and installation evenly across Expected dishwasher life. It is a planning estimate, not a prediction of replacement date or repair costs.
Methodology
Yearly operating costs
The calculator turns weekly loads into a yearly count using 52 weeks. Water and sewer rates are entered per 1,000 gallons, converted to per-gallon costs, and applied separately. Blank optional detergent, soap, and handwashing water-heating electricity inputs count as $0.

A negative annual operating difference means the dishwasher has lower estimated operating cost. A positive amount means hand washing has lower estimated operating cost.
Ownership and payback
Ownership results appear only after you enter a dishwasher purchase price. The yearly ownership estimate also needs an expected dishwasher life greater than zero.

Payback is calculated only when the yearly savings after maintenance are greater than zero. Otherwise, the entered one-time cost is not repaid under the entered assumptions.
Worked example
For 10 loads each week, a $0.20 per kWh electricity rate, a $4.00 water rate per 1,000 gallons, and a $6.00 sewer rate per 1,000 gallons, suppose dishwasher use is 3 gallons, 1 kWh, and $0.10 detergent per load. Its cost is $0.33 per load, or $171.60 per year. If hand washing uses 10 gallons, 2 kWh for heating, and $0.05 soap per load, its cost is $0.55 per load, or $286.00 per year. The annual operating difference is -$114.40, meaning dishwasher operation costs less. With a $500 purchase price, $20 yearly maintenance, and a 10-year life, estimated yearly dishwasher ownership cost is $241.60 and payback is about 5.30 years.
Calculation boundaries
The calculation uses the rates and per-load amounts you enter. It does not estimate labor time, gas water-heating cost, taxes, financing, changing utility prices, or unentered repair costs.
