Commission Calculator

Use this commission calculator to estimate your earnings from a flat rate, tiered plan, or quota-based plan, with splits, returns/chargebacks, caps, and draw recovery. You will also see a tier-by-tier breakdown and your effective commission rate for the pay period you pick.

How to use our Commission Calculator

  1. Select your Commission plan type (Flat rate, Tiered, or Quota/attainment) and your Pay period.
  2. Choose your Sales input method: Total sales for one number, or Deal list if you want to add multiple deals.
  3. Enter your sales amount(s). If you use Deal list, add each deal amount and the calculator will sum them into Total sales.
  4. (Optional) Open Advanced options and pick your Commission basis (Gross or Net). If you choose Net, enter Total costs for the same period.
  5. (Optional) Enter Returns or chargebacks if refunds or cancellations reduce what you get paid on.
  6. If you picked Flat rate, enter Commission rate (percent).
  7. If you picked Tiered, set Number of tiers and Tier method, then enter each tier end and rate (the last tier can be open-ended).
  8. If you picked Quota/attainment, enter your Quota plus the below-quota rate and accelerator rate.
  9. (Optional) Add split settings, a commission cap, a recoverable draw, base pay, and an optional withholding percent.
  10. Click Calculate to see commissionable amount, commission at each step (split, cap, draw), total earnings with base pay, and any annual projection.

Definitions

Commissionable amount: The dollar amount your commission percent is applied to after adjustments like returns/chargebacks (and possibly costs if you use net/profit basis).

Flat rate commission: One percent rate applied to the full commissionable amount.

Tier (commission tier): A range of sales with its own commission percent, such as 0 to 10,000 at 5%, then 10,000 to 25,000 at 7%.[1]

Marginal (stacked) tiers: Each rate applies only to the part of sales inside that tier.

Retroactive tiers: Once you reach a tier, one rate applies to all sales for the period (based on your highest tier reached).

Quota and attainment: Quota is your sales goal for the period; attainment is sales divided by quota (shown as a percent).[2]

Accelerator rate: A higher percent rate that applies after you pass a threshold (often after 100% of quota).

Split: Sharing commission with other people (equal split or a custom percent share).

Draw (recoverable): An advance that may be subtracted from future commissions until it is repaid.

Clawback / chargeback: When commission is reduced later because a deal is refunded, canceled, or not collected.

Methodology

1) Inputs the calculator uses

The calculator starts with Total sales for the selected pay period. It then builds a commissionable amount (the base dollars used for commission) and applies the plan math you pick (flat, tiered, or quota/attainment) as described in common commission plan structures.[1][2]

2) Commissionable amount (basis and adjustments)

commissionable_amount = total_sales - returns_chargebacks

If Commission basis is Net (profit), costs are required.

commissionable_amount = (total_sales - total_costs) - returns_chargebacks

Returns/chargebacks default to 0 when blank. Negative commissionable amounts are allowed and mean refunds/costs were larger than sales for the period.

3) Plan commission (before split, cap, draw)

Flat rate

gross_commission = commissionable_amount * (flat_rate_percent/100)

Tiered plan: marginal (stacked)

gross_commission = sum over tiers i of max(0, min(commissionable_amount, upper_i) - lower_i) * (rate_i/100)

last_tier_part = max(0, commissionable_amount - lower_last) * (rate_last/100)

The Tier breakdown output lists each tier portion and its commission so you can check the math.

Tiered plan: retroactive

applied_rate = rate_of_highest_tier_reached

gross_commission = commissionable_amount * (applied_rate/100)

Quota/attainment plan (two-segment)

attainment_percent = (total_sales / quota_amount) * 100

gross_commission = min(total_sales, quota_amount) * (below_rate/100) + max(0, total_sales - quota_amount) * (accelerator_rate/100)

4) Split, cap, and draw recovery (in that order)

Split factor depends on Split commission with others?

split_factor = 1 (no split), or 1/split_count (equal), or your_split_percent/100 (custom)

commission_after_split = gross_commission * split_factor

Cap is optional. A cap is treated as a maximum, not a minimum. If commission is negative, the calculator keeps it negative (it does not clamp to zero).

commission_after_cap = commission_after_split (if cap blank)

commission_after_cap = min(commission_after_split, commission_cap) (only when commission_after_split is non-negative)

Draw recovery is optional and modeled as a simple single-period subtraction (it does not track rolling balances across months).

commission_after_draw = commission_after_cap (if draw blank)

commission_after_draw = commission_after_cap - draw_amount (if draw entered)

5) Totals, effective rate, projection, and take-home

Final commission is commission_after_draw when a draw is entered; otherwise it is commission_after_cap.

total_earnings = base_pay + final_commission

effective_rate_percent = (final_commission / commissionable_amount) * 100

If commissionable_amount is 0, effective rate is shown as N/A to avoid divide-by-zero.

Annual projection (shown only if enabled): multiplier is 12 for Monthly, 4 for Quarterly, and 1 for Annual.

annualized_total = total_earnings * multiplier

Optional take-home estimate (shown only if withholding percent is provided):

estimated_take_home = total_earnings * (1 - withholding_percent/100)

6) Validation and safe handling

The calculator blocks calculation with a clear error message if required percent fields are blank, quota is not greater than 0 in quota mode, net/profit basis is selected without costs, tier bounds are not increasing, or split settings are not valid (like equal split with fewer than 2 people, or custom split outside 0 to 100).
