VAT Calculator

Use this VAT calculator to add VAT to a before-tax price, remove VAT from a tax-included price, or solve when you only know the VAT amount. Pick a VAT rate, rounding method, and currency symbol to get clear net, VAT, and gross results.

Add VAT (net to gross) You have the before-VAT amount (net). We add VAT to get the total (gross).
Remove VAT (gross to net) You have the VAT-included total (gross). We extract the net and the VAT part.
Solve from VAT amount You know the VAT part and the VAT rate. We compute net and gross.
Choose what your starting amount means. Add VAT means your amount is before VAT (net). Remove VAT means your amount already includes VAT (gross). Solve from VAT amount means you know the VAT part and want net or gross.
Enter the amount you have. If you chose Add VAT, this is the net (before VAT). If you chose Remove VAT, this is the gross (includes VAT). Numbers only; commas are allowed.
The VAT percentage rate (for example, 20 for 20%). This must be a real number >= 0.
This does not change the math. It only changes how results are labeled and formatted for display.
Advanced options
Solve-from-VAT settings
Rounding and display
Choose how rounding is applied. Round only final answers is common for quick estimates. Round each step (net, VAT, gross) may match some invoice line-item rules.
How many decimals to display in results (example: 2 for cents). The calculator will still compute with full precision internally before rounding based on your rounding method.
Credits and refunds
Set Yes only for credit notes/refunds where a negative net or gross amount is meaningful.

How to use our VAT Calculator

  1. Choose a Calculation mode: Add VAT (you have net), Remove VAT (you have gross), or Solve from VAT amount (you have the VAT part).
  2. Enter the Starting amount (currency). Commas are OK (example: 1,250.50).
  3. Enter the VAT rate (percent) as a number like 20 for 20%.
  4. Choose a Currency symbol for display (this changes labeling only, not the math).
  5. Open Advanced options if needed.
  6. If you picked Solve from VAT amount, choose whether you want Net from VAT amount or Gross from VAT amount.
  7. Choose a Rounding method: Round only final answers, or Round each step (net, VAT, gross) to match some invoice rules.
  8. Set Decimal places to show (example: 2 for cents).
  9. If you need a refund/credit note, set Allow negative starting amount to Yes, then enter a negative amount.
  10. Click Calculate to see Net amount, VAT amount, Gross amount, VAT as percent of gross, and a short Notes box about rounding and assumptions.

Definitions

VAT: Value-added tax, a percentage-based tax added to the price of many goods and services.

Net amount (before VAT): The price without VAT included.

Gross amount (including VAT): The total price after VAT is included.

VAT rate (percent): The percent used to compute VAT (example: 20 means 20%).

VAT amount: The tax part of the price.

VAT as percent of gross: VAT amount divided by gross amount, shown as a percent (often different from the VAT rate when VAT is included).

Rounding method: A rule for when to round decimals, which can change the final cents.

Methodology

Inputs and setup

Your starting amount means different things depending on the mode: net (before VAT), gross (includes VAT), or the VAT amount itself.

rate_decimal = vat_rate_percent / 100

Mode 1: Add VAT (net to gross)

Use this when your starting amount is the net price.

vat_amount = net * rate_decimal

gross_amount = net + vat_amount

Mode 2: Remove VAT (gross to net)

Use this when your starting amount already includes VAT.

net_amount = gross / (1 + rate_decimal)

vat_amount = gross - net_amount

Mode 3: Solve from VAT amount

Use this when your starting amount is the VAT amount. This requires vat_rate_percent > 0. If vat_rate_percent = 0, the only feasible VAT amount is 0; otherwise net and gross are not defined and results show N/A.

net_amount = vat_amount / rate_decimal

gross_amount = net_amount + vat_amount

gross_amount = vat_amount * ((100 + vat_rate_percent) / vat_rate_percent)

net_amount = gross_amount - vat_amount

Extra output: VAT as percent of gross

This helps explain why a VAT rate like 20% turns into 16.6667% of the gross when VAT is included.

effective_vat_fraction_of_gross = 100 * vat_amount / gross_amount

If gross_amount is 0, this output is N/A to avoid divide-by-zero.

Rounding and display rules

The calculator computes with full precision first. Then it applies your chosen rounding method and displays the number of decimal places you picked.

Round only final answers: round(net_amount), round(vat_amount), round(gross_amount) at the end

Round each step: round each intermediate value before using it in the next step

Negative starting amounts are blocked unless you enable Allow negative starting amount, because negatives usually mean refunds or credit notes.
