Estimate your total college cost (yearly and for your full program), then see net price after grants and scholarships plus what is still left to cover with savings, work, and loans.
Advanced options
How to use our College Cost Calculator
- Enter your program length (years) and your school year length (months).
- Pick your living situation (with parents/family, on-campus, or off-campus).
- Enter tuition and fees and housing and food for one school year (use the school-year budget numbers you expect to pay).
- Open Advanced options to add books, transportation, and personal/misc. so you do not forget common costs.
- If you have a one-time cost (like a laptop), enter it once in One-time costs.
- Enter your grants and scholarships per school year (gift aid only, not loans or work-study).
- Optional: enter savings/family help and student work per school year to see how much is still left to cover.
- Optional: enter student loans per school year to see whether your plan leaves a gap or a surplus.
- Optional: enter an annual cost increase percent if you expect costs to rise each year.
Definitions
Cost of attendance (COA): Your total estimated school-year budget, including tuition/fees and living costs. Schools often use COA as the starting point for aid conversations.[1]
Sticker price: Another way people describe the full COA before subtracting gift aid.[2]
Net price: COA minus grants and scholarships (gift aid only). Loans and student work are not subtracted in net price.[4]
Gift aid: Money you do not have to pay back, like grants and scholarships.[4]
Remaining to cover: The amount left after gift aid, savings/family help, and student work. This can be negative (a surplus).
Gap or surplus: Remaining-to-cover total minus planned loans total. Positive means you are short (gap). Negative means you have extra (surplus).
Methodology
What this calculator does
This calculator builds a simple COA budget, then computes net price using the standard idea: net price subtracts grants and scholarships only, not loans or work.[4] It also separates how you might cover the remaining amount (savings, work, loans) so you can compare plans without mixing funding with discounts.[3]
Inputs used
All dollar inputs are treated as USD per school year unless labeled one-time total. Program length is in years. Annual cost increase is a percent per year applied to costs over time.
Formulas (yearly)
coa_per_year = tuition_and_fees_per_year + housing_and_food_per_year + books_and_supplies_per_year + transportation_per_year + personal_misc_per_year
net_price_per_year = max(0, coa_per_year - gift_aid_per_year)
remaining_to_cover_per_year = net_price_per_year - savings_and_family_per_year - student_work_per_year
Formulas (full program with optional annual increase)
Y = program_length_years
g = annual_cost_increase_percent / 100
coa_total_program = sum_{y=1..Y} (coa_per_year * (1 + g)^(y-1)) + one_time_costs_total
net_price_total_program = sum_{y=1..Y} (max(0, (coa_per_year * (1 + g)^(y-1)) - gift_aid_per_year)) + one_time_costs_total
remaining_to_cover_total_program = net_price_total_program - (savings_and_family_per_year + student_work_per_year) * Y
planned_loans_total_program = loans_per_year * Y
gap_or_surplus_total_program = remaining_to_cover_total_program - planned_loans_total_program
How to interpret the results
COA shows the full budget (often called the sticker price) before aid.[2] Net price floors at zero so it cannot go negative even if gift aid exceeds COA. Remaining-to-cover and gap/surplus can be negative, which means your plan has extra room.
Validation and edge cases
Program length must be at least 1 year. School year length (months) must be from 1 to 12 because it represents the budget period for your per-year inputs. Required money fields must be valid numbers after removing commas/spaces, and all cost inputs must be zero or higher. Annual cost increase percent must be between -50 and 50 to help prevent accidental extreme entries. If any calculation becomes NaN or Infinity, the calculator stops and shows one clear error message instead of partial results.
