Square kilometer (km^2): An area unit for a square that is 1 kilometer on each side. Since 1 km is 1,000 m, 1 km^2 is 1,000 m by 1,000 m, or 1,000,000 m^2.

Hectare (ha): A metric land-area unit equal to 10,000 square meters [2]. One square kilometer equals 100 hectares.

Square meter (m^2): The base metric area unit used for the optional Same area in square meters check.

Acre: A US land-size reference unit. The calculator shows it only when Also show acres is set to yes.

Smart rounding: A display choice that keeps whole-number answers whole and shows a few decimal places when the result is not a whole number.

Mistake: Using Square kilometers (km^2) as if it were regular kilometers and multiplying by 1,000.
Fix: Use the Exact rule used : square kilometers to hectares means multiply by 100.

Mistake: Leaving the wrong direction in Convert when checking a hectares value back to km^2.
Fix: Switch Convert to Hectares to square kilometers before entering Hectares (ha) .

• Same area in acres is for context. It should not replace the main Converted area when a school problem, report, or data table asks for hectares or square kilometers.
• The calculator converts area units only. It does not measure land from a map, account for map projection choices, or fix inaccurate source data.
• Negative areas are blocked because land area cannot be less than zero in this conversion.
• Very large values are formatted to avoid scientific notation, but the practical accuracy still depends on how accurate the entered area is.

Conversion rule

The calculator reads only the input for the selected Convert direction. It removes commas and spaces, checks that the value is a finite nonnegative number, then applies the exact metric area factor.

hectares = square_kilometers * 100

square_kilometers = hectares / 100

The factor is 100 because area is squared. A square that is 1 km by 1 km is 1,000 m by 1,000 m, which is 1,000,000 m^2. A hectare is 10,000 m^2, so 1,000,000 divided by 10,000 equals 100.

Optional checks

If Also show square meters is set to yes, the calculator converts the same area to square meters using the starting unit.

square_meters = hectares * 10000

If Also show acres is set to yes, the calculator first finds square meters, then divides by the international-acre size.

Rounding and example

Rounding is applied after the math is done. For example, with Convert set to square kilometers to hectares and Square kilometers (km^2) set to 2.75, the main calculation is 2.75 * 100 = 275, so Converted area is 275 ha. If square meters are also shown, the same area is 2.75 * 1,000,000 = 2,750,000 m^2.
