Conversion method
The calculator divides the entered area by the number of square feet in 1 square mile. A mile has 5,280 feet, and area has two dimensions, so the length conversion factor is multiplied by itself.
square feet per square mile = 5,280 x 5,280 = 27,878,400
square miles = square feet / 27,878,400
For the acres comparison, it divides the same entered area by 43,560 square feet per acre.
acres = square feet / 43,560
Worked example
For 43,560 square feet, 43,560 / 27,878,400 = 0.0015625 square miles. The acres calculation is 43,560 / 43,560 = 1 acre.
Display choices
The main answer uses an ordinary decimal. When a nonzero answer is below 0.001 square miles, the calculator also shows scientific notation to make the small value easier to read. An entered area of 0 produces exactly 0 square miles and 0 acres.
