How to use our Half Birthday Calculator

  1. Enter your full date of birth, including the year.
  2. Review "Check from date." It starts as today's local date; change it if you are planning from another day.
  3. Select "Calculate" to see the next half birthday, its weekday, and the number of calendar days until it.
  4. Use "Equal-time midpoint between birthdays" only to compare definitions. It may differ from the main six-calendar-month celebration date.
  5. Sanity-check the countdown: if "Check from date" matches the listed next half birthday, the result should say 0 days.

Definitions

Half birthday: For the main result, the date six calendar months after a birthday anniversary.

Check from date: The calendar date used to decide which half birthday comes next and to count days remaining.

Equal-time midpoint: The exact halfway date and time between one birthday anniversary and the following anniversary.

Month-end adjustment: Using the last valid day of a target month when it does not contain the original day number.

Birthday anniversary: The matching month and day in another year. In this calculator's midpoint comparison, February 29 uses February 28 in a non-leap year.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a birth date without the year.
Fix: Enter the complete date. The year is needed to handle February 29 correctly.

Mistake: Planning from the wrong date.
Fix: Change "Check from date" before selecting "Calculate" so the countdown starts on the day you mean.

Mistake: Expecting a half birthday to always be 182 or 183 days after a birthday.
Fix: Use "Next half birthday" for the six-calendar-month celebration date. Calendar months have different lengths.

Mistake: Using the equal-time midpoint as the main celebration date.
Fix: Use "Next half birthday" for the common calendar-month rule. The midpoint is a comparison based on half the time between birthdays.

Mistake: Expecting an unavailable date such as February 31.
Fix: The calculator uses the last valid day of the target month when needed.

Mistake: Entering a birth date after "Check from date."
Fix: Choose a check-from date that is the same as or later than the date of birth.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The main answer uses a six-calendar-month celebration rule; an equal-time midpoint can fall on a different date.
  • If the target month does not have the birth day number, the main answer uses that month's last valid day. An August 31 birthday therefore maps to February 28 or February 29.
  • Dates are handled as local calendar dates, so the displayed answer does not shift because of a time-zone conversion.
  • For the midpoint comparison only, a February 29 birthday uses February 28 as its anniversary in a non-leap year.
  • The result is for calendar planning and does not determine eligibility for a school, workplace, program, or event.

Methodology

Calendar method

The main result finds the first half birthday on or after "Check from date." It takes the applicable birthday anniversary and adds six calendar months. If that target month is too short for the original day number, it uses the month's last valid day.

next half birthday = first qualifying birthday anniversary shifted by 6 calendar months

days until next half birthday = whole calendar days from check from date to next half birthday

Equal-time comparison

The comparison finds the birthday anniversary before the displayed half birthday and the following birthday anniversary. It then takes half of the calendar-day span. If that span has an odd number of days, the midpoint is at 12:00 PM.

equal-time midpoint = prior birthday anniversary + (days to following anniversary / 2)

Worked example

For a birth date of May 10, 2010 and a check-from date of January 1, 2025, the next half birthday is November 10, 2025. It is 313 calendar days away and falls on a Monday. The span from May 10, 2025 to May 10, 2026 is 365 days, so the equal-time midpoint is November 8, 2025 at 12:00 PM.

Weekday

The weekday comes from the main six-calendar-month date.

weekday = weekday of next half birthday
